What the lower capacity buys is a tool that is lighter, simpler and more precise for thin material. Thin sheet, foil, flashing, light gauge stainless, shim, mesh and thin plate all cut more accurately with a snip sized for them, because a heavy compound-action tool on thin material tends to distort and buckle the sheet rather than shearing it cleanly.

The blade specification is the interesting part. These are stainless steel blades heat treated to HRC 48-52, and both figures are worth reading. Stainless is unusual on a cutting blade and it is chosen for one reason: it does not rust. That matters for anyone cutting in the wet, cutting materials that will be handled afterwards, or working in food, marine, laboratory or hygiene contexts, where a carbon steel blade leaves rust marks on what it cuts. It also matters simply for tools left in a damp workshop.

HRC 48-52 is a moderate hardness and it reflects a genuine trade. Stainless does not take and hold the same hardness as a high carbon steel of the same class, so a stainless blade will not stay quite as sharp for as long as a carbon or chrome vanadium one. What you gain is corrosion resistance. That is the exchange, and it is why these are the lighter-duty tool.

Two habits. Match the tool to the material — forcing thin-gauge snips through 1.2mm sheet will spring the blades out of alignment and finish them.
