The work follows directly: cleaning out and truing rectangular slots, keyways and grooves; squaring up the corners of a hole or a recess; enlarging square and rectangular openings; dressing the internal corners of a fabrication; and fitting parts that must seat squarely against two faces. Anybody who has tried to square a keyway with a flat file knows why the shape matters — the flat file's own thickness stops it reaching into the corner, and the corner is precisely where the fit is decided.

The grades run coarse, bastard, second cut and smooth; second cut is the general-purpose middle grade, removing metal at a useful rate while leaving a surface most jobs need nothing after. On slot and keyway work that is the right choice, since a coarse file leaves ridges in a place that is difficult to blend afterwards.

The soft ergonomic handle is a safety component. A file used with a bare tang will, when it catches in the work, drive that tang straight back into the heel of your hand — one of the classic workshop injuries. A fitted handle eliminates it, and the specification here notes the grip gives good control, which matters on a file being worked inside a slot where you cannot see the teeth.

Three habits. Cut on the forward stroke only and lift on the return, because dragging back dulls the teeth and removes nothing. Keep the file square to the work — a square file tilted in a slot cuts the corner out of true, which is the one thing you were using it to avoid. And clean the teeth with a file card regularly, since a clogged file scratches instead of cutting.
