A round file can only enter a hole larger than itself, so its diameter sets a minimum. This one is thicker than the eight inch version, which means it will not reach into the smallest holes, and in exchange it removes metal considerably faster, resists bending, and works larger bores comfortably. Anybody opening out substantial holes, truing larger bores, dressing big internal radii or cleaning up cut tube will find the smaller file slow and inclined to flex. Workshops doing much of this work keep both sizes for exactly that reason.

The extra length also gives a longer stroke, and a longer stroke means fewer passes and a more even surface — a short file worked in a long bore tends to file a series of overlapping hollows rather than a true cylinder.

This is a second cut: the middle grade of coarse, bastard, second cut and smooth, removing metal at a useful rate while leaving a surface that needs little finishing. On bore work that matters, since coarse teeth leave ridges inside a hole which are difficult to blend out afterwards.

The soft ergonomic handle is a safety component rather than a comfort one. A file used with a bare tang drives that tang into the heel of your hand when it catches, and round files bind in holes more readily than flat files catch on flat work, so the risk is real.

Three habits. Cut on the forward stroke only and lift on the return, because dragging a file back across the work dulls its teeth and removes nothing. Rotate the file slightly as you push, so the teeth around the whole circumference share the work — a round file pushed straight through without turning wears a flat onto itself and files a flat into the bore. And clean the teeth with a file card regularly, since clogging makes a file scratch rather than cut.
