M8 by 1.25mm pitch is where threads start doing structural work. M8 bolts take a 12 or 13mm head and they hold engine ancillaries, brackets, mountings, suspension components, machinery frames and general fabrication — fasteners that carry load rather than merely holding a cover in place.
That changes what a tap is used for at this size. Below M8 most tapping is repair of a stripped or fouled thread in something light. At M8 and above, chasing threads becomes part of doing the job properly on assembly. A load-bearing bolt is tightened to a torque figure, and that figure assumes the thread is clean — because torque is a proxy for the tension in the bolt, and any torque consumed by friction in a rusty or paint-filled thread never becomes clamping force. A joint tightened to spec through a dirty thread is under-clamped and does not know it. Running a tap through the hole first is a few seconds that makes the torque figure mean what it says.
The 1.25 is the coarse metric pitch for M8, which is what most M8 fasteners use. There is also a fine 1.0 pitch used on some vehicle and machinery applications, and the two are not interchangeable — they look alike, both will start, and the wrong one destroys the thread within a turn. A pitch gauge settles it.
The material is 9CrSi alloy steel: a chromium-silicon tool steel that takes a high hardness at the cutting edges while retaining the toughness to resist snapping, which on a tap is the failure that matters.
The buyers are vehicle, commercial vehicle and plant mechanics, engineering and fabrication shops, maintenance fitters, agricultural workshops, machinery installers, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Use cutting oil generously throughout — dry cutting tears the thread and greatly increases the force, which is the main cause of broken taps. Back off half a turn per turn forward to break the chip. And drill the correct tapping size before cutting a new thread: too small and the tap has too much metal to remove and breaks, too large and the thread has insufficient depth and strips under load.
