M6 by 1.0mm pitch is the workhorse of small metric threads and probably the size a workshop taps most. M6 fasteners take a 10mm head, and they hold on covers, brackets, guards, ancillaries, trim, panels and light machinery throughout every vehicle and machine you are likely to work on.
Because M6 is used everywhere, M6 threads get damaged everywhere — stripped by over-tightening, corroded, packed with paint, or burred by a cross-threaded start. A single tap in this size will pay for itself in a week in a busy shop.
The two most useful things a tap does are worth separating. The first is chasing: running the tap through an existing thread to clean it out. That is not cutting a new thread, it is clearing rust, paint, thread-lock and debris so the fastener runs in freely under its own weight until it seats. It matters because a bolt forced into a dirty thread is exactly how threads strip, and because a torque figure means nothing if most of the torque is being consumed by friction in a fouled thread rather than clamping the joint.
The second is repair — recutting a thread that has begun to strip, or tapping a hole out to the next size up after drilling when the original is beyond saving.
The material is 9CrSi alloy steel, a chromium-silicon tool steel chosen because it takes a high hardness at the cutting edges while keeping enough toughness to resist snapping. On a tap that balance is everything, since the failure mode is breaking rather than going blunt.
The buyers are vehicle, motorcycle and three-wheeler mechanics, engineering and machine shops, maintenance and plant fitters, agricultural workshops, appliance repairers, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Cutting oil generously and continuously — dry cutting tears the thread and multiplies the force needed, which is the main cause of broken taps. Back off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip, since a tap jammed on its own swarf is a tap about to snap. And check squareness after two turns, from two directions ninety degrees apart, because a thread started crooked cannot be corrected once it is committed. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
