M4 by 0.7mm pitch is a small thread and it is the one that gets damaged most often, which is exactly why a single tap in this size earns its place in a toolbox.
Small threads strip easily. An M4 fastener is tightened by feel with a small screwdriver or a short driver, and the difference between tight and stripped is a fraction of a turn — particularly in aluminium, zinc alloy or plastic housings, which is where M4 threads usually live. Equipment casings, instrument panels, electrical enclosures, appliance covers, small brackets and machinery guards are all held together with M4, and all of them are made from materials far softer than the fastener.
A tap lets you rescue those. Chase a thread that is full of paint, rust or thread-lock so the screw runs in freely instead of being forced — which is how it stripped the first time. Clean up a thread that has picked up a burr. Or cut a fresh thread in a new hole where a fixing is needed and none exists.
The material is 9CrSi alloy steel. That is a chromium-silicon tool steel, and it is a considered choice for taps: it takes a high hardness for the cutting edges while retaining enough toughness to resist snapping. On a tap that matters more than on almost any other tool, because a tap is a slender fluted shaft being twisted hard, and the failure mode is breaking rather than blunting.
The buyers are engineering and machine shops, appliance and electronics repairers, vehicle and motorcycle mechanics, instrument and equipment technicians, maintenance fitters, and hardware dealers.
Three habits, and they matter enormously at this size because an M4 tap is fragile. Use cutting oil generously and keep applying it — dry cutting tears the thread and dramatically increases the force needed, which is the main reason small taps snap. Back off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip, because a tap jammed on its own swarf is a tap about to break. And use a small tap wrench with light hands, not a large one: the leverage of a big bar on an M4 tap will snap it before you feel any warning.
A broken tap in a hole is far harder to remove than a stripped thread is to repair — the tap is harder than the component and cannot simply be drilled out. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
