M10 by 1.5mm pitch is a substantial thread, used where a joint carries real load — suspension and steering fixings, engine and gearbox mountings, chassis brackets, machinery frames, structural fabrication and plant assembly.
At this size two things about tapping change. The first is force. Cutting a fresh M10 thread through steel by hand takes considerable effort, and it is the point where a bar type tap wrench with two hands becomes necessary rather than optional — a T-handle turned one-handed will not deliver the torque squarely, and unequal force is what starts a thread crooked.
The second is that the consequences of a poor thread are structural. An M10 bolt in a suspension or mounting application is tightened to a torque figure, and that figure only produces the intended clamping force if the thread is clean. Torque lost to friction in a rusted, painted or damaged thread never becomes tension in the bolt, so a joint tightened correctly through a bad thread is under-clamped and will work loose in service — while everyone involved believes it was done to specification. Chasing the thread with a tap before assembly is a short job that makes the torque wrench honest.
The 1.5 is the coarse metric pitch for M10. A fine 1.25 pitch also exists and is used on vehicles and machinery, and the two are not interchangeable — they look the same, both will start, and the wrong one ruins the thread within a turn. Identify it with a pitch gauge first.
The material is 9CrSi alloy steel, a chromium-silicon tool steel taking a high hardness at the cutting edges while retaining the toughness to resist snapping.
The buyers are vehicle, commercial vehicle and plant mechanics, engineering and fabrication workshops, structural and machinery fitters, agricultural and plantation engineering, maintenance departments, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Cutting oil generously and continuously. Back off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip, because a tap jammed on its own swarf is about to break — and a broken tap in a hole is harder than the component and cannot simply be drilled out. And check squareness after the first two turns from two directions. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
