M6 by 1.0mm is the most-used die size in most workshops, for the same reason M6 is the most-used tap: it is the fastener that holds the great majority of covers, brackets, guards, ancillaries and light assemblies together.
The everyday job is repair. A bolt with burred or crossed leading threads runs perfectly again once a die has been passed down it, and so does one that has corroded or filled with paint. That matters more than it sounds, because forcing a fastener with a damaged thread into a good hole transfers the damage to the hole — and repairing a stripped thread in a casting is a far bigger job than cleaning up a bolt. Running a die down a suspect bolt before it goes in is thirty seconds that protects the expensive half of the joint.
Cutting new threads is the other use. Threading plain M6 rod produces studs and screws of any length you need, which lets a workshop make a fixing rather than wait for one, and a long bolt can be cut down and re-threaded to suit.
The material is 9CrSi alloy steel, a chromium-silicon tool steel taking a high hardness at the cutting edges while keeping enough toughness not to chip. On a die that hardness is doing visible work: the die forms the thread profile, and a dull one tears the flanks so the thread will not run smoothly into a nut.
A die needs a stock to hold it square and concentric; the die holder in this range covers M3 to M12.
The buyers are vehicle, motorcycle and three-wheeler mechanics, engineering and machine shops, maintenance and plant fitters, agricultural workshops, appliance repairers, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Chamfer the rod end with a file before starting, because a square-cut end resists the die and forcing a start is how crooked threads begin. Check squareness after two turns from two directions ninety degrees apart. And use cutting oil generously, backing the die off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip — a die packed with swarf stops cutting and starts tearing.
Cut rod slightly over length, since the last thread or two are always incomplete and are best trimmed. Message us on WhatsApp for a price, or with the matching M6 tap.
