M5 by 0.8mm — the coarse metric die for 5mm rod and bolts, and a size that comes up constantly on machinery covers, brackets, enclosures and light assemblies.
The most useful thing a die does in daily workshop life is not cutting new threads at all — it is rescuing existing ones. A bolt whose leading threads have been burred by a dropped spanner, crossed by a hurried start, or flattened by a hammer will usually clean up completely if a die is run down it. So will a thread that has corroded or filled with paint. The alternative is throwing the fastener away, which is fine for an M5 bolt from a box and a real problem when the fastener is part of an assembly, an odd length, or simply not available.
Cutting new threads is the other half. Threading plain rod lets you make a stud or a screw of exactly the length required, which is how a workshop makes something fit rather than waiting for a delivery. Shortening a long bolt and re-threading the cut end does the same.
The material is 9CrSi alloy steel — a chromium-silicon tool steel that takes a high hardness at the cutting edges while retaining toughness. Hardness matters directly on a die: it is forming the thread profile, and any dulling shows immediately as a torn thread face that will not run smoothly into a nut.
A die needs a die stock to hold it square and concentric; the holder in this range covers M3 to M12.
The buyers are engineering and machine shops, vehicle and motorcycle mechanics, appliance and equipment repairers, electrical panel builders, maintenance fitters, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Chamfer the end of the rod with a file before starting — a square-cut end is hard to start a die on, and forcing the start is how a crooked thread begins. Check squareness after two turns, looking from two directions ninety degrees apart, because once four or five threads are cut the angle is committed. And use cutting oil generously, backing off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip.
Cut the rod slightly long, since the final thread or two a die produces are always incomplete and are best trimmed off. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price, or with the matching M5 tap.
