M10 by 1.5mm is a substantial die, and cutting a thread at this diameter by hand takes genuine effort — which is worth knowing before you start, because the technique matters more than at the small sizes.
There is a lot of metal to remove. That means cutting oil is not optional, chip clearance is critical, and the die stock needs to be turned with both hands. Backing the die off half a turn for every turn forward is what breaks the chip and clears it; a die packed with swarf stops cutting and starts tearing the thread flanks, producing a thread that looks finished and will not run smoothly into a nut.
The uses at this size are mostly structural. Making studs from plain M10 rod for engine, machinery and chassis mountings. Replacing a sheared stud with one cut to the original length. Repairing the leading threads on a suspension or mounting bolt that has been burred. And chasing threads on structural fasteners before assembly — which matters because a torque figure assumes a clean thread. Torque lost to friction in a damaged or corroded thread never becomes clamping force, so a joint tightened to specification through a bad thread is under-clamped and will work loose in service while appearing correct.
The 1.5 is the coarse metric pitch for M10; a fine 1.25 also exists on vehicles and machinery, and the two look alike but are not interchangeable — identify the pitch before you cut.
The material is 9CrSi alloy steel, a chromium-silicon tool steel taking a high hardness at the cutting edges while retaining the toughness not to chip under the substantial forces involved at this size.
The buyers are vehicle, commercial vehicle and plant mechanics, engineering and fabrication workshops, structural and machinery fitters, agricultural and plantation engineering, maintenance departments, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Chamfer the rod end generously — at M10 a square end is genuinely difficult to start a die on. Check squareness after two turns from two directions ninety degrees apart, because once several threads are cut the angle is committed and the stud will not sit true. And keep the oil flowing throughout rather than applying it once at the start. Message us on WhatsApp for a price, or with the matching M10 tap.
