Heavy Duty Cable Cutter (9.5")

The case for a small cable cutter is access. Working inside a consumer unit, a panel, a junction box or a floor void, there is often no room to open a two-handed cutter at all, and the cable still has to be cut cleanly. A 9.5 inch tool goes where the big ones cannot.

What lifts this above the basic 8 inch cutter is the specification. The blades are hardened high carbon steel with a black polish finish that resists rust, and the handle is moulded ergonomic TPR — thermoplastic rubber, shaped to the hand rather than a plain dipped coating. On a tool that gets squeezed hard, in a confined space, often at an awkward angle, that grip is a genuine difference.

The blade shape is what makes it a cable cutter rather than a pair of snips. Opposing crescent blades gather the stranded conductor and shear it while holding the strands together, leaving a clean round end. A crushed or splayed end — what pliers, snips or a hacksaw give you — will not enter a lug or a terminal properly and cannot be crimped to a reliable connection. Since the whole point of cutting cable is usually to terminate it, the quality of that end is the job.

The specification names copper and aluminium, and that is a real limit. The blades are ground fine for soft conductor and will chip on steel wire, armour, chain or nails, after which the tool crushes rather than cuts.

Two points. Cut with the cable back in the throat of the jaws rather than at the tips, where the crescents close fully.

And the safety one: a TPR handle is comfort and grip, not insulation. It carries no tested electrical rating. Never cut a live conductor. Isolate, prove dead with a two-pole tester before and after, then cut.
