A half round file is two files in one, and that is why it is usually the second file anybody buys after a flat one.
One face is flat and works like an ordinary flat file — flat surfaces, outside edges, squaring up. The other face is curved, and that curve is what nothing else will do: it works concave surfaces. Opening out a curved slot, truing the inside of a radius, dressing a curved edge, cleaning up a large hole, shaping a saddle or a fillet — none of those can be done with a flat file, which will only ever cut the shape of its own cross-section and leaves flats around a curve.
A round file works small holes and tight radii; a half round covers the larger, gentler curves, and between them very little is out of reach.
This is a second cut at ten inches. Second cut is the middle grade — coarse, bastard, second cut, smooth — removing metal at a useful rate while leaving a surface good enough that most work needs nothing afterwards. It is the sensible general-purpose grade, and for curved work particularly, because a coarse file on a curve leaves ridges that are awkward to blend out.
The soft ergonomic handle matters as a safety item. A file must never be used with a bare tang: when the file catches in the work — and they catch — the tang is driven back into the heel of the hand. A properly fitted handle removes that risk.
The buyers are engineering and fabrication workshops, welders and steel fabricators, vehicle and machinery mechanics, maintenance fitters, agricultural and plant workshops, technical training, and hardware dealers.
Three habits. Cut on the forward stroke only and lift on the return, since dragging back over the work dulls the teeth without removing metal — the commonest way files are worn out early. Roll the file slightly as you push it along a curve so the whole rounded face does the work rather than one line of teeth. And clean the teeth with a file card regularly, because aluminium, brass and lead clog them quickly and a clogged file scratches rather than cuts.
Never file hardened steel, which is harder than the teeth and will strip them in a single stroke. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price.
