Its virtue is stroke length. Because it is a simple pivoted scissor action with long blades rather than a compound-linkage snip with short ones, it takes a long bite each time you close it. A cut across a full sheet takes a handful of strokes instead of dozens, and that matters for edge quality as much as speed — every stop and restart in a cut leaves a small step, so a long cut made in many short bites finishes visibly serrated while one made in few long strokes finishes straight.

The trade is that everything comes from your hand. Without a linkage to multiply your grip, thicker material is harder work than it would be with aviation snips, and tight curves are not what this shape is for. It is a straight-line tool, and on straight lines nothing hand-held is quicker.

It is drop forged #55 carbon steel with heat treated blades. Forging flows the steel's grain along the blade rather than cutting across it, which is what keeps a long thin blade from cracking at the pivot where the load concentrates. #55 carbon steel takes a keen, hard edge, which is the property a long shearing blade depends on — a shear cuts by two edges passing, and any dullness shows immediately as tearing rather than cutting.

Three habits. Do not close the blades fully at the end of a stroke — stopping just short and reopening avoids leaving a step in the edge, and it is the single technique that most improves a hand-cut edge. Let the waste side of the sheet bend down and away rather than riding up into the blades.
