The grades run coarse, bastard, second cut, smooth. A bastard file has large widely spaced teeth that remove metal fast and leave a rough surface; a smooth file removes very little and leaves a fine finish. Second cut sits between them, and it is the sensible general choice: it takes metal off at a useful rate while leaving a surface good enough that most jobs need nothing after it. If a workshop owns one flat file, it should be a second cut.

The normal working sequence explains why both this and the bastard file exist. Take the bulk off with a bastard, refine with a second cut, and finish with a smooth if the surface really matters. Using a bastard file all the way through means sanding out deep marks afterwards, which is more work than swapping files.

The soft ergonomic handle is a safety feature rather than a comfort one. Files must never be used with a bare tang exposed: when a file catches in the work, and they do, the tang is driven straight back into the heel of the hand. It is one of the classic workshop injuries and a fitted handle eliminates it.

Three habits that decide a file's working life. Cut on the forward stroke only and lift on the return — a file dragged backwards over the work dulls its teeth and removes no metal at all, and this is the single most common way files are worn out prematurely. Clean the teeth with a file card or a stiff brush regularly, since aluminium, brass and lead clog them fast and a clogged file scratches rather than cuts. And never file hardened steel: it is harder than the teeth and strips them in one pass.
