File cuts run from coarse through bastard, second cut and smooth. Bastard is the coarsest in common workshop use: the teeth are large and widely spaced, so it removes metal fast and leaves a correspondingly rough surface. That is exactly what you want for the first stage of a job — taking a weld down, removing the bulk of an excess, squaring up a rough cut edge, dressing a casting, or reducing something to near its final size quickly. Trying to do that with a fine file is slow and pointless work.

The counterpart is that a bastard file does not leave a finished surface. The normal sequence is to take the bulk off with a bastard file and then refine with a second cut, which is why both exist in this range and why most workshops own both. Using a bastard file to the finish and then trying to sand out the marks is more work than changing files.

It is a flat mill file at ten inches — mill files are single-cut, with parallel rows of teeth rather than the crossed rows of a double-cut file, which gives a cleaner action and is the traditional pattern for draw filing and for sharpening.

The soft ergonomic handle is more than a comfort item. A file must never be used with a bare tang: when a file catches — and they catch — the tang is driven back into the palm, which is a classic and nasty workshop injury. A fitted handle removes that risk entirely.

Three habits. Cut on the forward stroke only and lift on the return, since dragging back dulls the teeth and removes nothing. Clean the teeth with a file card regularly, because clogged teeth scratch instead of cutting.
