Die Holder (25mm(M3-12))

A round die is a hardened steel disc with the thread form cut through it. Held loose it is useless; it has to be gripped concentrically and squarely, and it has to be held firmly enough that it does not slip while you apply substantial turning force. This holder takes 25mm dies covering M3 to M12, which is the standard size range for hand threading.

The body and ends are black powder coated, with each end knurled for a comfortable non-slip grip. Knurling is the detail worth noticing. Cutting an external thread is oily work by necessity, and a smooth handle in an oily hand slips at exactly the moment you need control — which is the start of the cut, where squareness is decided. A knurled surface keeps its grip when wet.

Starting square is the whole skill, and it is worth understanding why. A round die usually has a slight taper on one face — the lead — which eases it onto the rod for the first few threads. That face must go on first, and the die must sit square to the rod. If it starts tilted, the thread is cut at an angle and the resulting fastener will bind, cross-thread or refuse to enter its mate, and there is no correcting it afterwards. Look at the die from two directions ninety degrees apart after the first two turns.

The work: threading rod to make studs and custom-length bolts, restoring a damaged thread on an existing bolt, threading tie rods and adjusters, making up fixings on site when the right bolt is not available, and cleaning up threads that have been burred.

Three habits. Chamfer the end of the rod first with a file or a grinder — a square-cut end is difficult to start a die on and a small chamfer makes it easy. Use cutting oil generously and keep applying it, because dry threading tears the thread face and blunts the die. And back off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip.
