At that size the case for a proper cable cutter rather than any other method becomes overwhelming, and it is worth being specific about why. Large stranded conductor is expensive, and it is usually cut to a length that has already been planned. A cut that crushes the end flat means trimming back and losing material you may not have to spare — and if the cable has been pulled to length through a duct, there is no spare at all. The crescent blades on a cable cutter gather the strands and shear them while holding the conductor round, so the end that comes off the tool is the end that goes into the lug.

It also matters for the joint itself. A crimped lug relies on the conductor filling the barrel evenly. A splayed or flattened end does not fill it evenly, so the crimp is uneven, its resistance is higher than it should be, and on a heavy current circuit that means a connection that runs warm — the beginning of a fault that shows up months later under load.

The blades are hardened T8 steel with steel handles and rubber grips, and the length provides the leverage that conductor of this size needs.

The material limit stands at every size: copper and aluminium only. The blades are ground fine for soft conductor and will chip on steel wire, armour, chain or nails, after which the tool tears rather than shears. Cut steel armour with a hacksaw or an armour cutter and use these on the conductors.

Three habits. Cable right back into the throat of the jaws. Support long or heavy cable so it cannot roll as the blades close, since a conductor that turns gives an angled end. And the safety rule that applies to all of these: rubber grips are for comfort and carry no tested insulation rating whatsoever.
