Forty-two inches is the largest bolt cutter in the range, and it is a two-person-scale tool bought for the heaviest rebar, chain and rod that hand cutting can reach: heavy reinforcement, large chain, thick studs and bar, and heavy mesh.
At this length the force at the jaws is enormous, and the honest thing to say is that the tool is now capable of exceeding what the material around it will take. It is entirely possible to cut through a piece of rebar and have the freed end whip; possible to have a cutter slip off a round bar under full load; possible for an offcut to leave at a speed that will injure someone standing in the wrong place. None of that is a reason to avoid the tool — it is a reason to set up properly. Brace one handle on the ground, keep your face and body out of the closing arc, look at where the offcut will travel and make sure nobody is there, and wear eye protection. Bolt cutters this size are frequently a two-person job, one steadying the work and one cutting.
The blades are T8 alloy steel, heat treated: a high carbon tool steel with the hardness to shear mild steel and the toughness to take the forces a 42 inch linkage develops.
The hardness limit is unchanged by size and is the specification to respect: do not cut anything harder than HRC 42. The blades in this tool are no harder than those in the eight inch one — only the force behind them is greater, so attempting hardened material simply damages them more thoroughly. Hardened padlock shackles, high tensile and grade 8.8 bolts, hardened security chain and spring steel are all above the line and will chip these blades permanently. Mild steel rebar, plain chain, mild bolts and rod and mesh are what the tool exists for.
The handles are ergonomic and comfortable.
The buyers are heavy construction and reinforcement contractors, demolition and salvage operations, civil and infrastructure contractors, scrap and recycling yards, and hardware dealers supplying heavy trades.
Two habits. Work right back in the throat of the jaws where leverage peaks, never at the tips. And keep the pivot bolts properly adjusted, because at this size blades that pass one another rather than meeting will chip on the very first cut. Ask us on WhatsApp for a price.
