Thirty inches is where a bolt cutter becomes a two-handed tool used with your body rather than your arms, and it is bought for heavier reinforcement and chain work: substantial rebar, heavy chain, larger bolts and studs, thick rod and heavy mesh.

At this length the mechanics deserve some thought, because the tool now generates enough force to hurt you as well as the work. The compound linkage multiplies your effort many times, and the handles are long enough that you will naturally use your shoulders and your weight. That means the closing jaws are moving with real energy behind them, and the cut-off piece leaves at speed. Stand so that the offcut is not travelling towards anyone, keep your face clear of the jaws, and wear eye protection — a short length of rebar released under tension is a genuine hazard on a site.

The blades are T8 alloy steel, heat treated: a high carbon tool steel from the cutting tool and die family, hard enough to shear mild steel and tough enough to take the forces this linkage develops.

The hardness limit is on the specification and it applies at every size: do not cut anything harder than HRC 42. Length and leverage do not change it. A thirty inch cutter has more force behind it, but its blades are the same hardness as the small one's, and above 42 Rockwell C the material is harder than the blade — so more leverage simply means damaging the blades more decisively. Hardened padlock shackles, high tensile and grade 8.8 bolts, hardened security chain and spring steel all sit above that line. Mild steel rebar, plain chain, mild bolts and rod, mesh and fencing wire sit below it, and that is what this tool is for.
