Aviation Snips Straight Head (12")

Twelve inches is the larger straight-cut aviation snip, and the extra length does two things that matter on heavier work.
The first is leverage. Snips cut through a compound linkage that multiplies your grip, and a longer handle multiplies it further — so material at the top of the capacity range cuts with less effort, and material that a ten inch pair fights through parts cleanly. That is easier on your hand and easier on the blades, since most snip damage happens when a tool is forced at its limit.
The second is blade length. A longer blade takes a longer bite per stroke, which means fewer strokes down a cut and — more importantly — fewer stops and restarts. Every time you close the blades and reopen them mid-cut you leave a small step in the edge, and a long cut made in many short bites finishes serrated rather than straight. Fewer, longer strokes give a cleaner edge.
The blades here are high carbon steel, heat treated, rather than the chrome vanadium used on the ten inch snips in this range. High carbon steel takes a very keen, hard edge, which is what a cutting blade wants; the trade against chrome vanadium is slightly less toughness, so the same care about not forcing them applies with a little more force.
Stated capacity is up to 1.25mm cold rolled steel sheet and 0.8mm stainless. Stainless is lower because it is harder and work-hardens as it is cut, so the metal ahead of the blades toughens during the cut itself.
The buyers are sheet metal fabricators, HVAC and ducting installers, roofing and cladding contractors, vehicle body and panel repairers, sign makers, and hardware dealers supplying fabrication trades.
Three habits. Take long strokes with the blades opened well, rather than nibbling — nibbling leaves a serrated edge that has to be dressed afterwards. Keep the waste curling away below the tool so it does not ride up into the blades. And wear gloves, because a freshly sheared sheet edge cuts skin without any pressure.
