Straight-cut aviation snips are the ones to buy first if you are only buying one pair, because straight cutting is what most sheet work actually involves — trimming a panel to size, cutting a duct section, sizing a flashing, cutting tray or trunking to length.
The three-tool system is worth explaining even on the straight pair, since it is what makes aviation snips different from ordinary tin snips. Left-cut snips send the waste curling right, right-cut snips send it curling left, and each is designed to keep the offcut clear of the blades while following a curve in its own direction. Straight-cut snips are geometrically neutral: the waste parts evenly on both sides, which is exactly what you want on a straight line. They will also cut a gentle curve in either direction, which makes them the most generally useful of the three — the left and right pairs only earn their place when the curve is tight.
The colour convention is worth knowing: yellow handles for straight, red for left, green for right.
The blades are chrome vanadium, heat treated — chromium for hardness and wear resistance so the edge keeps cutting in steel sheet, vanadium for the toughness that stops a hard edge chipping. Stated capacity is up to 1.25mm cold rolled steel sheet and 0.8mm stainless. The stainless figure is lower for a real reason: stainless is harder to begin with and it work-hardens as it deforms, so the metal immediately ahead of the blades becomes tougher during the cut.
The compound linkage multiplies your hand grip several times over, which is the only reason a hand tool can shear steel sheet at all.
The buyers are sheet metal fabricators, HVAC and ducting installers, roofing, gutter and flashing contractors, vehicle body repairers, sign and display makers, electricians cutting tray and trunking, general maintenance, and hardware dealers, who sell straight snips more than the other two patterns.
Three habits. Open the blades fully and take long cuts rather than short nibbles, because nibbling leaves a serrated edge that then has to be dressed. Keep the waste side curling away below the tool rather than letting it ride up. And wear gloves — a freshly cut sheet edge will open your skin with no pressure at all.
