Right-cut aviation snips cut curves turning to the right, and understanding why that needs a separate tool is the key to using them well.
When snips cut sheet, the waste has to move out of the way, and it curls as it goes. On right-cut snips the blade geometry sends that curl to the left and down, keeping it clear of the blades and clear of your hand as you follow a line bending right. Use a left-cut pair on the same curve and the waste rolls back into the tool, jamming on the blades and stopping you every few centimetres to lift it clear. On a long curved cut in a duct, a gutter or a panel that is the difference between a clean job and a fight.
So left and right snips are not versions for left-handed and right-handed people — most people use both in the same hand. They are for cutting in different directions, and any sheet metal worker carries both plus a straight pair.
The near-universal colour convention makes them quick to pick out: green handles for right cut, red for left, yellow for straight.
The blades are chrome vanadium, heat treated. Chromium gives the hardness and wear resistance needed to keep an edge working in steel sheet; vanadium refines the grain and adds the toughness that stops a hard edge chipping. Stated capacity is up to 1.25mm cold rolled steel sheet and 0.8mm stainless — stainless being lower because it is harder and work-hardens as it is cut, so the metal ahead of the blades gets tougher during the cut itself.
The compound linkage is what makes hand-cutting steel possible at all, multiplying your grip several times before it reaches the blades.
The buyers are sheet metal fabricators, HVAC and ducting installers, roofing, gutter and flashing contractors, vehicle body repairers, sign and display makers, electricians cutting tray and trunking, and hardware dealers supplying fabrication trades.
Three habits. Let the blades shear rather than tearing — if the sheet is folding instead of cutting, the snips are being used past their capacity or the blades are dull. Keep the cut going in one direction rather than backing up, since restarting mid-cut leaves a ridge. And wear gloves, because a freshly cut sheet edge cuts skin without needing any pressure.
