Auto-Oil Glass Cutter (PS handle)

The wheel makes a shallow, continuous scratch in the surface. That scratch is a line of weakness, and when the glass is then flexed the crack runs down through the thickness following the score. One firm pass, then a clean snap. What ruins the job is going over the score a second time: the wheel skips out of the first line, makes a second one beside it, and the glass breaks along neither.

The auto-oil feature is the practical part. A reservoir in the handle feeds cutting oil to the wheel continuously, which does two things. It lubricates the wheel so it rolls rather than skids, and it keeps the score line wet, which stops the microscopic crack from healing and closing before you break it. A dry score has to be broken almost immediately; an oiled one breaks cleanly and consistently. Anybody who has cut glass with a dry wheel and had it break crooked knows the difference.

The wheel is YG8, a tungsten carbide grade. Carbide is used because glass is hard and abrasive, and a hardened steel wheel goes blunt after a few metres. A carbide wheel keeps scoring cleanly for a very long time, and wheel condition is essentially the whole of cutting performance. The cutter is chrome plated. Stated capacity is 2 to 12mm glass thickness, which spans window and picture glass right up to substantial glazing.

The handle is PS plastic — light, and the lower-cost option against the metal-handled version in this range.

Three habits. One pass only, at steady speed and steady pressure — you want a hiss, not a scratching sound, and never go back over a score. Break the glass immediately after scoring, over a straightedge or with pliers, since a score left for hours does not break as cleanly.
