Twelve inch blades are the standard and what most people use, but ten inch blades exist for a reason: a shorter frame is more manoeuvrable in a confined space and stiffer for the same construction. What decides whether a hacksaw cuts well is blade tension, and it is the thing most people get wrong. Four habits that transform hacksawing. Tension the blade properly. Fit the blade with the teeth pointing forward, away from the handle, because a hacksaw cuts on the push stroke — fitted backwards it will rub and not cut, which is a surprisingly common mistake. Use long, full-length strokes at moderate speed rather than short fast ones, since short strokes wear out a few teeth and leave the rest unused. And lift the pressure on the return stroke.
