Five shapes are included — hand, half round, square, three square and round — and the shapes are the point of a set rather than a way of adding pieces. A file can only produce the shape of its own cross-section, so the profile you need is dictated by the work. The flat hand file works flat surfaces and outside edges. The half round does concave curves on its rounded face and flats on the other. The square cleans out rectangular slots, keyways and corners. Three habits. Files cut on the forward stroke only — lift on the return, because dragging back across the work dulls the teeth for no benefit. Use light pressure, especially on needle files, since these are slender and will snap if leaned on. And keep them clean with a file card or a brush: soft metals like aluminium, brass and lead clog the teeth, and a clogged file scratches the work instead of cutting it.
