The principle is neat. Each extractor is a hardened tapered tool with a coarse thread cut in the reverse direction — left-handed. You drill a pilot hole down the centre of the broken screw, tap the extractor into it, and then turn it anticlockwise. Because the thread is left-handed, turning it that way drives the extractor deeper and grips harder at the same time as applying the exact rotation needed to unscrew the broken piece. The tighter it grips, the harder it turns. Very often the screw comes straight out.

What makes it worth trying first is what the specification says: it removes the broken screw without damaging the threads of the component. That is the whole point. The alternatives — drilling the screw out entirely, or drilling and re-tapping to a larger size — both destroy the original thread and turn a small job into a machining one. If the extractor works, the component is left exactly as it was.

Four habits that decide whether it works. Centre-punch the broken screw accurately and drill the pilot hole dead centre and straight — an off-centre hole means the extractor grips one side and cuts into the component's thread. Use the drill size recommended for the extractor. Apply penetrating oil and let it work first. And apply steady turning force rather than shock; if it will not move, heat around the outside of the component is a better next step than more force on the extractor.
