Five eight-inch files covering the shapes a general workshop actually needs, and one specification line worth reading carefully: file hardness up to HRC 62-65.
That number is high, and on a file it should be. A file removes metal by cutting with rows of small teeth, and it can only cut material softer than the teeth themselves. Most steel a workshop meets — mild steel, mild castings, general fabrication — sits well below 62 Rockwell C, so a file at that hardness cuts it properly. A softer file does not cut; its teeth flatten and it starts burnishing the surface, polishing the metal rather than removing it, which is the point at which people decide filing is hard work when in fact the file is finished.
The set covers medium tooth files in flat, triangular, semicircular and half round, plus a carpentry semicircular file — and the spread of shapes is the useful part, because a file can only produce its own cross-section. Flat for flat surfaces and outside edges. Triangular for sharp internal corners and thread flanks. Semicircular and half round for concave curves on the rounded face and flats on the other. The carpentry file is coarser and cut for wood, which removes material far faster and clogs far less on timber than a metalworking file would.
Medium tooth is the general-purpose cut: fast enough to remove metal at a useful rate, fine enough to leave a surface that needs little finishing.
The specification says the set works metal and wood, which the mix of files supports.
The buyers are engineering and fabrication workshops, vehicle and machinery mechanics, maintenance fitters, carpenters and joiners, technical training workshops, and hardware dealers supplying general workshops.
Three habits that decide how long files last. Cut on the forward stroke only and lift on the return — a file dragged backwards across the work dulls its teeth and removes nothing. Use a file card or wire brush regularly, because aluminium, brass, lead and softwood clog teeth quickly and a clogged file scratches rather than cuts. And never use a file without a handle on the tang; a bare tang driven into a palm when the file catches is one of the classic workshop injuries.
Store files apart, since teeth dull each other on contact. Message us on WhatsApp for a price.
