That imbalance is deliberate and it reflects what actually happens in workshops. Cutting a new external thread onto a rod is a job you do occasionally. Repairing an internal thread is a job you do constantly — a stripped thread in a casting, a corroded thread in a housing, a thread full of paint or rust, a hole that needs cleaning up so a bolt will run in freely. Taps get used many times more often than dies, and a set weighted towards taps is a set weighted towards real use.

A full set of taps for a given thread is three: a taper tap with a long lead to start the thread and guide it in straight, a second or plug tap to cut deeper, and a bottoming tap with almost no lead for threading right to the base of a blind hole. Using only one tap is why people fail to get a bolt fully into a blind hole.

Before you can repair a thread you must know what thread it is, and metric coarse and fine pitches at the same diameter look identical to the eye. The gauge settles it in seconds and stops you running the wrong tap through a hole, which destroys it.

Three habits. Identify the thread with the gauge before touching it. Use cutting oil generously throughout, since dry cutting tears the thread and is the main cause of broken taps. And back off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip — a tap jammed on its own swarf is a tap about to snap, and a snapped tap in a blind hole is a much worse problem than the stripped thread you started with.
