The five sizes are the point. These are the coarse metric threads that account for the overwhelming majority of general fastening: M6, M8, M10 and M12 are what brackets, covers, machinery, vehicles and general fabrication are held together with, and M7 fills a gap that turns up on Japanese vehicles more often than people expect. A set of five that covers ninety per cent of the work is more useful to most buyers than a set of forty that covers everything and costs several times as much.

Having taps and dies in matched sizes is what makes a set worth buying together. A tap cuts an internal thread — repairing a stripped hole, cleaning out a corroded one, or threading a new hole after drilling. A die cuts an external thread — making a stud from plain rod, shortening a bolt and re-threading it, or restoring a damaged thread on a fastener. Between them you can produce or repair both halves of a joint, which is what lets a workshop make something fit rather than waiting for a part.

Both holders are included, which matters because neither tool works without one: a tap needs a wrench gripping its square drive to be turned squarely with two hands, and a die needs a stock holding it concentrically.

Three habits that decide whether hand threading succeeds. Start square and check after two turns from two directions ninety degrees apart — a thread started crooked cannot be corrected, and after four turns it is committed. Use cutting oil generously and keep applying it, because dry cutting tears the thread face, blunts the tool and is the main reason taps break. And back off half a turn for every turn forward to break the chip; a tap jammed on its own swarf is about to snap, and a snapped tap in a blind hole is far worse than the original problem.
