That one-handed operation is worth being explicit about because it is the entire reason this design exists. A screw clamp needs one hand on the frame and one on the handle, which means the work has to be already held by something else. A ratchet clamp is placed and tightened with a single hand on the trigger, so the other hand can keep two pieces aligned right up until the clamp takes over. Inside, the mechanism is a pawl that grips a black-finished steel bar and steps it forward with each squeeze, with a lever that releases it instantly. Wipe the bar down and it stays reliable.

The body is hard plastic. That keeps the clamp light, and it sets a boundary that is worth respecting rather than arguing with. The force a trigger and pawl can develop is a fraction of what a threaded spindle produces, and a moulded body is not a cast iron frame. This is a clamp for holding things in position, not for forcing a joint closed or for gripping steel through a welding operation. Kept to holding work it is excellent and lasts; asked to do an F clamp's job it will fail, and the failure will be the plastic.
