Spring clamps are the ones you reach for without thinking, and this set of six 6" clamps is bought for exactly that: having enough of them that there is always one to hand. Squeeze, place, let go. There is no screw to wind, no ratchet to pump and no adjustment at all — the clamp is on the work in under a second, and off again just as fast.
That speed is the whole proposition, and it dictates what they are good for. Spring clamps hold light things lightly. Holding a template or a pattern down while it is traced or routed round. Holding trim, beading and moulding while the adhesive grabs or the pins go in. Holding a tarpaulin, dust sheet or shade net. Keeping a plan or a drawing flat. Holding a repair together for a few minutes. Bunching cables out of the way. Holding two light pieces in alignment while a proper clamp is fitted. In a workshop they end up doing a dozen small jobs a day that nothing else does as quickly.
What they are not is a substitute for a screw clamp. The force comes from a spring, which means it is fixed — you cannot apply more when you need more — and it is modest by design. A structural glue joint needs a screw or a bar clamp; a spring clamp will hold the pieces while you fetch one.
The bodies are a nylon and fibreglass mixture, which is a considered material rather than plain plastic. Glass fibre in a nylon matrix raises stiffness and strength substantially over nylon alone and keeps the clamp from going soft or brittle with age and sunlight — worth having in a tool that lives in a spring-loaded state and spends time outdoors. The jaws are PE, polyethylene, which is soft enough not to mark finished surfaces and slippery enough that glue does not stick permanently to it.
The buyers are carpenters and joiners, cabinet and furniture makers, sign and display makers, upholsterers, picture framers, photographers and event crews rigging backdrops, and general maintenance. Hardware dealers sell them in sets because nobody ever wants only one.
A couple of things worth knowing. Spring clamps are stronger nearer the pivot than at the tips, so grip as deeply onto the work as the shape allows if you want the most from them. Do not leave them clamped onto soft foam or upholstery for long periods, since even a modest constant pressure will leave a permanent impression. And keep them out of long-term direct sun where you can — the body material is chosen to resist it, but nothing plastic loves it forever.
