If a workshop owns G clamps at all, it owns fours. This is the size that gets grabbed without thinking about it, and the reason is that four inches of opening covers an enormous proportion of everyday work: two pieces of light angle or flat bar held together for tacking, a workpiece and a bench top, a board and a batten, a bracket and the beam it is going on. Anything much smaller starts to feel restrictive and anything much larger starts getting in the way.
The frame is high grade iron casting, and it is worth understanding what that means in use rather than in a catalogue. A G clamp is essentially an arch with a screw across it, and every bit of the force you generate at the spindle tries to spring the arch open. Cast iron is enormously strong in compression and very stiff, which is exactly what an arch wants, and casting lets the section be made thick where the bending load is highest and thinner elsewhere. The honest limitation is that cast iron is brittle: it does not stretch and warn you before failing the way steel does. In practice that means tightening firmly with your hand on the handle and stopping there. A pipe slipped over the bar to get more pressure is how G clamps break, and they break suddenly.
The spindle runs an acme thread — a broad, flat-flanked, trapezoidal form rather than the sharp V of a bolt — which is what makes it wind smoothly all the way to full pressure and keeps it from jamming under load.
At four inches the clamp is at home in fabrication work above all, because welding is the one place where the rigid one-piece G clamp beats every faster alternative. Nothing slips when a tack pulls the joint, nothing melts, and a spatter-covered clamp cleans up and carries on. Beyond that it is doing carpentry, panel repair, bench work, jig setting and holding parts for drilling.

Some practical notes. Put packing between the jaw and any finished surface — the pads are flat steel and will print into timber. On welding work, keep the clamp back from where the arc will be and give the spindle a wipe of anti-spatter or a smear of grease, since weld spatter welded into an acme thread is what ruins these. Wind the clamp closed onto the work with the fixed jaw against the reference face, so any small movement as it tightens happens on the moving side rather than pushing your alignment out.
