The specification line worth reading on this clamp is the one about the spindle, because it explains why a good G clamp feels completely different in the hand from a cheap one. The thread here is an acme thread. An ordinary bolt uses a V-shaped thread, which is designed to hold itself tight and to be strong in tension. An acme thread is trapezoidal — squared off, with broad flat flanks — and it is the form used on machine tool leadscrews, vices and clamps, wherever the job of the screw is to move something powerfully rather than to fasten it.

Two things follow from that. The broad flanks carry the load over a much larger area, so the thread does not deform under heavy clamping pressure and does not become progressively stiffer as it wears. And the shallower angle wastes less of your effort in friction, so more of what you put into the handle comes out as force at the jaw. That is the whole reason the tool winds smoothly right up to full pressure instead of binding and needing a bar through the handle in the last quarter turn.

Three inches is a genuinely useful size and often the first G clamp somebody buys. It takes ordinary board thicknesses with the work bench top included, holds two pieces of light section together for welding, grips a piece to a bench while it is sawn or filed, and closes a repair while glue goes off. The frame is high grade iron casting, which is the traditional and correct material — iron is very strong in compression, and the closed loop of a G clamp works almost entirely in compression and tension around the arch.

The one thing that shortens the life of a G clamp is neglecting the thread. Wipe grit off it, keep a film of oil on it, and never leave it stored fully wound down under tension. If the swivel pad at the end of the spindle stops swivelling, free it and oil it rather than living with it, because a pad that cannot rotate scrubs across the work as it tightens and marks everything it touches.
