At this length two characteristics of the design become important. The first is bar flex. Two feet of bar under load bows, and a bowed bar means the jaws are no longer square to each other — pressure concentrates at the tips of the pads and the middle of the joint stays open. The remedy is more clamps at moderate pressure rather than fewer clamps wound hard, with stiff cauls laid across the work to spread the load into a line instead of a series of points. That approach gives a flatter, better joint and is easier on the tool.

The second is that a clamp this size has enough weight to pull an unsupported assembly over or twist it out of square. Work flat on a bench or trestles, support the clamps rather than letting them hang off an edge, and put them in opposing pairs above and below a panel so their weight and their pressure cancel out.

The mechanism is the same trigger and pawl as the smaller sizes, running on a black-finished bar, and it remains a one-handed tool — which at twenty-four inches is a considerable advantage, because holding a large panel aligned with one hand while placing a clamp with the other is exactly the situation that has no other solution when you are working alone.

The body is hard plastic, and the honest reading of that at this size is that clamping force is modest relative to the span. For holding a well-fitting glue-up while it cures, that is fine and is what modern adhesives want. For pulling a large assembly into shape it is not enough, and trying is how the housing gets broken. Get the fit right first and the clamps only have to hold it.

The jaws carry soft non-marking pads, which is what allows a finished or veneered panel to be clamped directly rather than through packing.
