Working at that scale is where the one-handed action stops being a convenience and becomes the reason the job is possible. Glue does not wait. Once an assembly has been spread and brought together you have a short window to get every clamp on, aligned and tightened before the adhesive grabs, and a clamp that can be placed and set with one hand while the other holds the assembly square is worth several that cannot. It is also why the quick-release lever matters: coming off fast, without unwinding anything, is half of the speed.

Understand the pressure, though, because at this size the temptation to over-rely on the tool is greatest. A trigger and pawl mechanism in a hard plastic body develops far less clamping force than a screw does. That is not a defect, it is the trade for the speed, and for most glue-ups it is entirely sufficient — modern adhesives need the joint closed and held, not crushed. What it will not do is pull a badly fitting joint together. If a joint needs force to close, the answer is to correct the fit, not to buy a bigger ratchet clamp, because that is precisely the situation where the plastic body gives up.

The jaws have soft non-marking pads, so assembled work that has already been sanded, veneered or finished can be clamped without packing. The bar is black finished, and keeping it clean is a real maintenance item at this size — twelve inch clamps live in glue, and squeeze-out that hardens on the bar makes the pawl slip.

Dry-fit before glue goes anywhere near the work. Use cauls or battens across a wide joint so pressure spreads instead of denting at each pad. Alternate clamps above and below a panel to stop it bowing. Check the diagonals for square while you can still adjust, not once it has set.
