That situation comes up constantly. Gluing up a panel where the joint sits in the middle of the width. Holding a stiffener or a batten across a sheet. Repairing a split some way in from the edge of a board. Fixing a mounting plate in the middle of a workpiece. Clamping through a table or bench top to something well inboard. A conventional shallow-throat clamp will not reach any of those, and the usual workaround — moving the pressure to the edge and hoping — is exactly how joints end up gapped in the centre and tight at the ends.

Deep throat comes with a mechanical consequence worth understanding. The further the jaw is from the bar, the longer the lever arm bending the frame when you tighten, so a deep clamp works its own structure harder at the same clamping force than a shallow one does. It is built for it, but it is a reason to apply firm hand pressure and stop there rather than heaving on it, and a reason to use two clamps rather than one clamp very tight.

The bar is nickel plated, which is what keeps the sliding jaw doing its job. The whole F clamp principle depends on the jaw running freely by hand and then locking under load, and both halves of that depend on a smooth, clean, unrusted bar. The threaded spindle is black finished and the handle is a two-component moulding, hard inside for strength and soft on the outside where it is gripped.

Get the most out of it by spreading the load. A 120mm reach onto a thin panel concentrates a lot of force on one small pad, and the panel will bow around it — a hardwood caul laid across the work turns that point load into a line and gives a flat glue-up. Push the sliding jaw up to the work by hand before tightening, keep dried glue and paint off the bar, and clean squeeze-out before it hardens.
