Two things change at this length and both are worth knowing before you buy. The first is that a one-metre bar has real flex in it. Under heavy clamping pressure the bar bows, and when it bows the jaws stop being parallel and start pinching at their tips. On a wide glue-up that shows up as a joint tight at the faces and open in the middle. The way round it is not more force, it is more clamps at lower pressure and a pair of stiff cauls laid across the work to distribute the load. Two clamps at moderate pressure with a caul will give a flatter, stronger joint every time than one clamp wound down hard.

The second is that a clamp this size is heavy enough to move the work. Hang a metre-long clamp off the edge of a carcase that is not supported and it will pull the whole thing over or twist it out of square before the glue has set. Lay assemblies flat on a bench or on trestles, support the clamps rather than letting them dangle, and work in opposing pairs above and below the panel so the loads cancel.

The mechanics are the same as the rest of the range. The lower jaw slides freely along the bar by hand and locks by friction under load, so the screw only travels the last short distance — which is the only reason a large glue-up is possible in the working time of the adhesive. The bar is nickel plated to keep that sliding action reliable, the threaded spindle is black finished, and the handle is a two-component moulding with a soft outer grip.

Dry-assemble first, always, because there is no time to solve a fitting problem once glue is on a piece this size. Measure both diagonals as you tighten rather than at the end. Use just enough pressure to close the joint — squeezing glue out of a joint weakens it. And clean the bars before the squeeze-out hardens; glue set on a nickel bar has to be scraped, and scraping is what eventually ruins the sliding surface.
