What eight inches is genuinely for is thickness. Two structural timbers face to face, a beam and a plate, laminated stock, thick formwork, heavy sections held for welding, a workpiece plus packing plus a bench top. These are the depths where six inches runs out.

The frame is high grade iron casting, and the size makes stiffness the dominant concern. An arch this deep has a long span to hold against the spindle load, and any spring in the frame is pressure that never arrives at the joint. Iron's stiffness in compression, with the section cast heavier where the bending moment is greatest, is the whole reason this shape is still made in cast iron rather than fabricated in steel.

The spindle runs on an acme thread, the flat-flanked trapezoidal form used on vices and machine leadscrews. Its broad bearing surfaces do not deform under high pressure and it winds smoothly to full load, which at this size makes the difference between a clamp you can genuinely tighten and one that binds in the last turn.

The buyers are structural fabricators and steel erectors, carpenters and formwork contractors, boat and vehicle body builders, and heavy engineering and plant maintenance. Hardware dealers supplying contractors carry this size rather than counter trade.

Two things go wrong at eight inches more than anywhere else in the range. The first is overtightening. A clamp this size gives real leverage and cast iron gives no warning before it fails, so tighten by hand and never with a bar through the handle. The second is single-clamp distortion: a big clamp on one side of an assembly generates enough force to pull the whole thing out of true, so use them in opposing pairs and check with a square as you go rather than at the end. Pack under the jaws on anything you care about, keep the thread oiled and free of weld spatter, and store it wound open rather than tight.
