At this size the case for Torx over any other drive is at its clearest. A fastener that has to carry load needs to be tightened to a real figure, and a drive that ejects the tool as torque rises simply cannot do that — which is what a cross-head recess does by design. Torx drives on faces almost perpendicular to the turn, so the key stays engaged and the full torque reaches the fastener. That is precisely why high-torque fixings moved to Torx and hex rather than staying with cross-heads.

The T-handle gives two hands on a crossbar, which is genuinely useful for cracking a T40 fixing loose after a few years in service. The same leverage means the final tightening is better done with a T40 bit and a torque wrench, since these fasteners generally have specified figures and a T-handle gives you no way to know what you are applying.

The material is forged chrome vanadium steel, hardened and tempered, satin finished and chrome plated for corrosion resistance. Forging flows the grain along the shaft rather than cutting across it, which raises the torque at which a key twists — and at T40 the loads through the six points are substantial.
