A cross-head screw warns you. As torque rises, the recess cams out and the driver jumps — irritating, but it tells you the fastener is home. A Torx recess has driving faces almost perpendicular to the direction of turn, so there is no wedging action and nothing pushes the tool out. It simply keeps transmitting torque until something gives. On a T30 fixing that something is usually the thread in an alloy housing, or occasionally the head twisting off.

Put a T-handle on it and the situation is sharper still, because the crossbar with both hands on it produces considerably more torque than an L-key. You have a drive that will not release and a tool that applies a lot — which is excellent for undoing a seized fastener and unforgiving when tightening one.

So the working method is: use the T-handle to loosen and to run the screw down, and finish with a T30 bit and a torque wrench wherever a figure is specified. On brake, suspension and machinery mounting fixings, which is where T30 lives, those figures usually exist.

The material is forged chrome vanadium steel, hardened and tempered, satin finished and chrome plated for corrosion resistance.

Two habits. Seat the key fully before applying force, because a Torx key part way in bears on the tips of its points, and at this torque that rounds a recess quickly.
