The difference is in how the drive transmits force. A hex recess has six flat faces and comparatively little depth, and the tool bears on those flats. A Torx recess is a six-pointed star whose driving faces sit almost perpendicular to the direction of turn, and it is deeper for its width. That means Torx grips more securely in a smaller head, it does not push the tool out under load, and it survives being undone and done up many times.

For a manufacturer that is worth a great deal: a smaller head means a smaller boss, a lighter casting, less material. It is why Torx has steadily replaced both hex and cross-head fixings on appliances, vehicles and electronics over the last few decades.

T15 turns up on appliance and equipment casings, electronics, vehicle interior and trim fixings, small machinery covers and furniture fittings.

The T-handle keeps the key square in the recess, which matters on any small drive, and the shaft rolls between the fingers to spin a screw out once it is loose.

Two habits. Push the key fully into the recess before turning — a Torx key that is only part way in bears on the tips of its six points, which is one of the few ways to damage a Torx screw.
