The crossbar gives you two hands on a long lever, and that produces a lot of torque. On an 8mm socket head cap screw — used on machinery mountings, hydraulic components, driveline and structural assemblies — that is genuinely useful for cracking a tight fastener loose. It is also more torque than many of those fasteners are specified to receive.

Socket head cap screws are usually high tensile, so the screw itself will take a great deal. What often will not is what it threads into: an aluminium housing, a casting, a thin boss. The screw is stronger than its hole, and a T-handle at this size gives you enough leverage to strip that hole without the key ever feeling strained. If a torque figure is specified, use a hex bit and a torque wrench for the final tightening and keep the T-handle for loosening and running down.

The 200mm shaft reaches deep counterbores, and once a screw is moving the shaft spins between the fingers to wind it out quickly.

The material is forged chrome vanadium steel, hardened and tempered, with a satin finish and chrome plating for corrosion resistance. Forging flows the steel's grain along the shaft rather than cutting across it, which is what keeps a key twisting instead of snapping — and a snapped hardened key inside a socket head cannot be drilled out.

Two habits. Clean the recess and seat the key fully before applying force — at this torque a key bearing on the top of the flats will round a socket head in seconds.
