Six millimetre socket head cap screws hold a great deal together: machinery frames and guards, hydraulic blocks and fittings, gearbox and pump housings, motorcycle and vehicle components, equipment mountings and general engineering assembly. They are usually high tensile, they are usually tightened properly, and there are usually several of them.

That combination is exactly what a T-handle suits. The crossbar delivers even torque from both hands with nothing trying to tip the key in the recess, which matters because socket heads are shallow and a tilted key loads the top corners of the flats. Once each screw is cracked loose, the shaft rolls between your fingers and it spins out. On a cover with eight fixings, that is a different pace of work from an L-key entirely.

The material is forged chrome vanadium steel, hardened and tempered, with a satin finish and chrome plating for corrosion resistance. On a key the failure mode is twisting until it snaps rather than wearing out, and forging — which flows the grain along the shaft instead of cutting across it — is what raises the point at which that happens.

Two habits worth keeping. Clean the recess and seat the key fully before applying torque — packed dirt or thread-lock stopping the key going fully home is the commonest cause of a rounded socket head, and a rounded socket head has no larger size to fall back on. And if a fastener has a specified torque figure, finish with a hex bit and a torque wrench rather than judging by feel, because a T-handle gives you enough leverage to exceed it comfortably.
