The virtue is control. A T-handle is gripped across the axis of the fastener, so the turning force arrives evenly from both sides and nothing tries to tilt the key in the recess. An L-key applies its force from one side, and that side load is exactly what lifts a small key out of a shallow socket head and rounds it. On fine work, a T-handle is measurably more accurate.

The risk is the crossbar. It is a lever with your whole hand on it, and it produces considerably more torque than most people expect from a small tool. A 2.5mm socket head cap screw usually threads into aluminium, plastic or a thin section, and the thread will strip long before the key gives you any warning. The screw offers so little resistance that you never feel the moment you passed the point of tight.

So the discipline on small T-handles is to stop at seated. Wind the screw down until it meets the surface, take up the load, and stop. If a torque figure exists, use a torque driver rather than judgement.

The material is forged chrome vanadium steel, hardened and tempered, with a satin finish and chrome plating against corrosion.

Clean the recess before you insert the key — a hex socket faces upward and collects paint, dirt and thread-lock, and a key that cannot seat fully bears on the top millimetre of the flats.
