On an L-key, your hand is off to one side of the fastener. All the force arrives through a single arm, which means the key is being pushed sideways as well as turned — and on a small fastener that side load is what tips the key in the recess and starts rounding it. A T-handle puts the crossbar square across the axis of the screw, so you grip both ends and the two forces cancel. The key stays straight in the recess, the torque arrives evenly, and nothing is trying to lever the tip out.

The second advantage is speed. Once a screw is loose, the shaft can be rolled between finger and thumb and the fastener spins out. An L-key has to be lifted and repositioned or cranked awkwardly.

At 2.0mm this is a small key on a short 75mm shaft, suited to instrument and equipment assemblies, electronics housings, model and precision work, and small machinery components.

The material is chrome vanadium steel, forged, hardened and tempered, with a satin finish and chrome plating for corrosion resistance. Forging matters on a key because it flows the grain of the steel along the shaft rather than cutting across it, and a key fails by twisting until it snaps rather than by wearing out.

Two habits, and the first is specific to T-handles. The crossbar gives you real leverage — the specification says so plainly — and on a 2mm fastener that is more torque than the screw or its thread can survive. Ease off; a T-handle makes it easy to strip something small without ever feeling that you pushed hard.
