Sets very commonly stop at T40. T45 belongs to heavier work: truck, bus and trailer components, agricultural and earthmoving machinery, generator and compressor mountings, industrial machine guarding and frames, and large appliance and plant chassis. The first time it is needed is usually on a job already in pieces, which is the worst possible moment to find out.

At this size it is worth being straight about what an L shaped key can and cannot do, because the fasteners have got larger while the tool has not changed in principle. The force reaches the screw through a bent bar held at one end, and there is a limit to how much of it you can deliver in a controlled way. On a fixing that has been torqued down on a truck chassis and left to corrode for five years, that limit arrives well before the fastener moves.

The key is still the right thing to own. It gets into places a bit and socket assembly cannot reach, it is what you use to run a fastener out once it is free, and it costs a fraction of the alternative. But for breaking loose and for final tightening on components this size, a Torx bit socket on a proper drive is the honest answer, because the force runs straight down the axis of the screw and can be measured. If you are doing this work regularly, buy both and use each for what it is good at.

One practical warning. A Torx recess gives such a positive grip that a fastener can feel entirely secure right up to the moment the lobes let go, so there is very little useful warning in your hand. Judge it by whether the screw is actually turning, not by whether the key still feels solid.
