The nature of the work changes with that. These fixings are tightened to a specification, they carry load in service, and they are very often underneath a vehicle or a machine where water, mud and salt collect. In this climate a T40 recess on an underbody fixing will be sitting full of packed rust and road dirt long before anybody needs to undo it, and that packed material is the reason a good key fails on a good screw. It stops the tip reaching the bottom of the recess, so the load concentrates at the mouth where the lobes are thinnest, and the recess rounds while the thread has not even begun to move.

Clearing it out properly is not a nicety at this size. A pick, a wire brush, a blast of compressed air, and check by eye that the key drops all the way home before you put any weight on it.

The other half of the job is putting it back. Fixings of this size on suspension, brakes and seat mountings usually have a published torque figure, and that figure exists because the joint depends on clamping load rather than on the bolt merely being tight. Use the key to break the fastener loose and to run it down, and set the final figure with a torque wrench and a Torx bit.
