T10 lives inside things: laptop and computer housings, instrument clusters and dashboard electronics, small appliance chassis, telephone and telecom equipment, camera and optical assemblies, small motors and fans, and a good deal of imported consumer equipment where the manufacturer chose a drive the customer was not expected to own.

That last point is what causes the damage. Somebody needs to open a device, has no T10, and finds that a small flat screwdriver blade or a 2mm hex key will go into the recess. Both almost fit. A flat blade bridges two of the six lobes and levers them outward; a hex key sits on its corners against the flanks of the lobes. Either one will turn a loose screw, and either one will wreck the recess on a tight one. Once those six small lobes are rounded there is nothing left to grip and nothing to step up to, and drilling out a screw inside an electronic assembly is a job nobody enjoys.

The second thing to know at this size is when to stop. A T10 key is thin, and the steel is hardened so it will twist and then snap rather than bend gently first. If a screw has thread lock on it, or has corroded, the key will reach its limit before the screw moves. Pushing harder at that point does not produce a turned screw, it produces a broken key with its end still in the recess. Better to back off, put a drop of penetrating fluid on it, give it time, and try again.

Approach it straight, seat it fully, and make sure the recess is clean before you start, because a small Torx socket packed with dust and old grease will not let the key reach the bottom.
