A hex key turns a fastener by twisting along its own length. Make the arm longer and it winds up further before the tip moves, so a long 3mm key gives you noticeably less feel for what is happening down in the recess. At the same moment that longer arm is working as a longer lever, so the same effort from your hand arrives at the screw as more turning force. Less information, more force, and a fastener that has not become any stronger.

Three millimetre socket head cap screws almost always thread into something soft — an alloy housing, a plastic boss, a thin bracket. The screw is high tensile; the hole it goes into is not. So the working discipline with a long key at this size is to let the reach do the job and not the leverage. Run the screw down until it takes up against the surface and stop there.

None of which is an argument against the pattern, only against using it carelessly. When a 3mm screw sits at the back of a machine housing or behind a guard, this is the only tool that gets to it without taking the obstruction off first.

And most people buying a single 3mm key are replacing one. It is the size that gets bent, dropped inside a machine or left on somebody else's bench, and when it goes the other eight keys in the drawer are still perfectly sound. Buying back the one that is missing beats buying nine you already own.

The steel is chrome vanadium, forged, then hardened and tempered — chromium giving the hardness that keeps the six corners square, vanadium refining the grain so the key twists under overload rather than shearing.

One note on the name. The bracket in Harden's catalogue title carries their factory carton quantity, not what you get. This is a single 3mm key.
