At the small end of the hex range the sizes step in useful jumps and each one covers a clear band of fasteners. Up here they sit almost on top of one another, and that is not indecision on Harden's part. It is because these sizes belong to individual machines rather than to a general standard. One manufacturer builds a press with 17mm sockets, another builds a crusher with 18mm, a third specifies 19mm on a hydraulic assembly. There is no size that covers the neighbourhood.

Which makes substitution the thing to avoid absolutely. A 16mm key will enter a 17mm socket. It will feel loose, and a good many people will decide it is close enough and pull on it anyway. What actually happens is that the key contacts only the corners of the recess instead of bearing on the flats, so the whole load lands on six narrow lines of metal. The corners deform, the socket becomes round, and a fastener that was merely tight is now unturnable by any key at all. On plant of this size the recovery is drilling, an extractor, or welding a bar to the head, with the machine standing idle throughout.

So measure or check the manual, and buy the size the machine uses. That is precisely what these singles are for.
